
Kowhai (Dragons Gold)

This Kowhai is famous for its beautiful brilliant yellow racemes of nectar-rich flowers, which appear in early spring
and is a favourite food for NZ native
birds such as
the Tui and Wood Pigeon.
The Kowhai Dragons Gold grows
around 1.5 m tall x 1 m in width.
It is an evergreen variety producing greenish yellow leaves over a long
period from winter
until mid spring.

Lemon Meyer

Lemon Meyer grows well throughout NZ

The Meyer Lemon is one of the easiest
and most reliable
fruiting lemons
for
NZ gardens.
The clean, dark green foliage forms a medium sized plant with waxy
white fragrant flowers which appear in
spring, summer and autumn.
As they mature they produce tasty,
juicy lemons - for maximum
fruit and flowers place in full sun.

Lime (Tahitian)

The Tahitian Lime is a vigorous tree with bold dark green leaves which are slightly serrated at the edges.
The fruit are small to medium in size, with thin skin turning a pale yellow at maturity. The Tahitian Lime's flesh is wonderfully
juicy and is without seed. Fruit ripens in winter and is a fabulous addition
to any garden.

Magnolia

Magnolias are evergreen and some of
the first trees to lift the veil of winter with their fresh and vibrant flowers gracing
bare branches in spring.
Coming early in the season, with their
thick, waxy petals forming goblets on
bare branches, a mature magnolia in
full bloom is a breathtaking sight.
With a little care and planning they are versitile plants which can
form the backbone of any garden

Pohutukawa
- Metrosideros excelsa
Best suited for planting in the Northern
part of the North Island
however the Pohutukawa is known to grow in other
coastal areas
throughout NZ
The magnificent Pohutukawa is also well known as NZ's Native Christmas Tree.
Slow growing Pohutukawa eventually
reach 15 - 20 metres in height showing beautiful
red flowers on maturing from December to January.
The Pohutukawa has special significance
for Maori. Some legends tell the story of
Tawhaki who tried to reach the skies. However, Tawhaki fell and died, and it is
said
that his blood colours the flowers
of the Pohutukawa |

Mexican Orange Blossom

Suited to garden or container.
Over spring and into summer the
evergreen Mexican Orange Blossom
makes a
beautiful show.
It is a shrub from the temperature areas
of Mexico and grows between 1 to 2m
high with glossy dark green leaves
and clusters
of white flowers that have
the fragrance
of orange.
Easily cut back to maintain
desired height

To be admired for its soft grey-green foliage, blending well with other
colours
in the garden.
The attractive smooth grey trunks and branches take on a gnarled, twisted look
when this tree reaches maturity.
The Olive is not only grown for its beauty but of course, for its very distinctive culinary fruit and oil.
Olives grow very well in pots as
well as the garden, and are also well
suited for topiary. |

Manuka (Tea Tree)

re-vegetation
Mānuka is a medium sized evergreen
which can grow up to
10 meters
tall and 3m wide
The Mānuka's leaves are variable in shape and size with white flowers, occasionally tinged with pink and rarely red, 1 cm in diameter,
occur in spring and
early summer.
Although early settlers to New Zealand worked hard to clear their land of Mānuka often viewing it as an invasive shrub, today, these plants can act as an important
tool for re-vegetating land.

Totara

Podocarpus Totara
Suited for planting throughout NZ
for large home gardens or rural settings
The Totara tree is one of the majestic
forest canopy trees.
The leaves are
2.5cm
long, narrow at both ends and
are dull brownish green.
A mature Totara can
reach up to 30m although,
this takes over 100 years.
The mighty Totara symbolises
respect to the Maori people of NZ.
Maori legend tells about Rata who
cut down a Totara Tree to build a
Waka (canoe)
but failed to ask the forest for permission.
During the night the
creatures of the forest
rebuilt the tree
until Rata
realised that he had to
first ask for permission to cut down
the tree and respect the forest.

Camellia Hiryu
Suitable for planting throughout NZ
Suited to garden or container.
'Hiryu' produces good-sized, bright
pink to deep rosy red flowers during
mid March to early June.
Slow growing, upright to spreading shrub
or small tree with age.
Oval, glossy, leaves and profuse
winter to spring blooming flowers
