The magnificent Pohutukawa is well known as
New Zealand's Native Christmas Tree.
Slow growing Pohutukawa eventually reach 15 - 20 metres in height showing beautiful
red flowers on maturing from December to January.
The Pohutukawa has special significance for Maori. Some legends tell the
story of
Tawhaki who tried to reach the skies. However, Tawhaki fell and
died, and it is said
that his blood colours the flowers of the Pohutukawa.
Best suited for planting in the Northern part of the North Island however
the Pohutukawa is known to grow in other coastal areas throughout
New Zealand.
