There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction you get while enjoying a cup of tea, looking outside and knowing that your winter gardening chores are sorted. With the promise of spring just around the corner, now is the time to be completing all those winter gardening chores you haven’t yet got around to doing. Grab your spade and come with us to discover more about them.
7 Must Do Winter Gardening Chores
With spring and Father’s Day on the way, now is the time to finish off all those winter gardening jobs you’ve yet to do. After all, with the warmer weather arriving shortly, you’ll be wanting to spend more time outdoors enjoying the fruit of your labour, maybe even afternoon tea outside on Father’s Day. But before we get carried away, start ticking off these winter garden jobs:
- Tidy up your lawn by spraying for broad-leaf weeds, filling in any gaps with lawn mix. Now is also a good time to take your mower in for a service before the lawns start rapidly growing.
- If you haven’t already, start planting out those strawberries. They actually need to be experiencing cold weather to encourage flower growth.
- Prepare the garden beds for spring growth by adding fertiliser or sheep pellets, along with some good old compost.
- Mulch up around your trees and shrubs so they don’t get dry feet in the upcoming months, then shrivel up and die.
- If moss is a problem, you want to take care of that now. For moss in grass, rake the lawn and then spray, and for moss on paths, remove if you can or spray it. Moss on paths can be very slippery which is why we recommend removing it as soon as possible.
- Get busy pruning those fruit trees with diseased or dead wood to encourage new spring growth. Consider not only the natural shape of the tree, but also air and sunlight movement through the branches.
- Now is the time to plant your early potatoes to enjoy them around Christmas time. Make sure you add lots of compost to their stems as they grow.
